The origin of the game of golf

In the 15th century, Scotland was where the modern game first appeared. The Open Championship, the first major golf competition, was held for the first time in 1860.

Background on Golf

Golf's beginnings are unknown and hotly contested. However, it is widely acknowledged that Scotland is where modern golf originated in the Middle Ages. The game did not become widely popular outside of the United Kingdom until the late 19th century, when it  extended to the British Empire and the United States.

A Scottish parliamentary act from 1457 contains one of the oldest mentions of golf and outlaws the sport because it interferes with military training. However, the sport persisted, and by the 16th century, Scotland had a number of golf courses.

The game of golf started to catch on in other regions of Europe in the 17th century. The first golf course in the United States opened in 1894, and the first one in England opened in 1608.

The Golf Rules

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in Scotland oversees golf regulations. The game will be fair and consistent thanks to the rules.

The basic rules of golf are as follows:

  • The game is played with a set of 14 clubs, including a driver, irons, wedges, and putter.
  • The goal of the game is to hit the ball into a series of holes in as few strokes as possible.
  • The ball must be played from where it lies, unless it is in a hazard.
  • A hazard is an area of the course that is specially protected, such as a water hazard or a sand trap.
  • Players are not allowed to touch the ground with their club before hitting the ball.
  • Players are not allowed to improve their lie or the condition of the ground.
